Strength Training at Excel!

What is strength training?

Strength training or resistance training involves the performance of physical exercises that are designed to improve strength and endurance. It is often associated with variations of weightlifting. It can also incorporate different types of training techniques such as calisthenics, isometrics, and plyometrics.

What do you do in strength training?

Work all of your major muscle groups — including the abdomen, hips, legs, chest, back, shoulders and arms. Each workout in strength training should be balanced, working both the anterior and posterior as well as lateral and medial muscles in different planes of motion and around different axes.

What are some examples of strength training?

Lifting weights, resistance bands, TRX bands, body weight training and more. At Excel Body Fitness we focus on providing a mix of strength training. Every week, our X Series classes focus on different muscle groups to provide the most well rounded and balanced resistance training possible.

What classes offer strength training?

Here at Excel Body Fitness our two major classes that focus on strength training are X-COMMANDO and X-COMBO.

X-COMMANDO is a traditional strength training class that focuses primarily on 3-4 muscle groups utilizing dumbbells, barbells, TRX, slam balls, BOSUs and bands. The muscle groups and exercises performed in X-Commando class changes every 2 weeks which will keep the class interesting and your muscles guessing and it also complements our X-COMBO class.

X-COMBO keeps your heart pumping in the fat burning zone and at the same time forces your muscles to become stronger, toned and lean. This class is designed to sculpt as you improve your body's overall functional movements through cardio, low rep, combo strength! This class will challenge you through 3-4 opposite muscle groups from X-COMMANDO. By constantly challenging the body in new ways the program keeps the body from getting used to the exercises!

How will these strength training classes benefit me?

  1. Building strength allows you to perform daily tasks much easier,  improve athletic performance in sports that require speed, power, and strength, and it may even support endurance athletes by preserving lean muscle mass.

  2. Burns calories efficiently - Strength training helps boost your metabolism in two ways.First, building muscle increases your metabolic rate. Second, research shows that your metabolic rate is increased up to 72 hours after strength-training exercise.

  3. Decreases abdominal fat (Visceral fat) which is accomplished by a combination of weight training and cardio, rather than cardio alone.

  4. Can help you appear leaner. This is because muscle is more dense than fat, meaning it takes up less space on your body pound for pound. Losing body fat and building stronger and larger muscles showcases more muscle definition, creating a stronger and leaner appearance.

  5. Improves heart health. Multiple studies have shown that regular strength-training exercise can decrease blood pressure, lower total and LDL (bad) cholesterol, and improve blood circulation by strengthening the heart and blood vessels.
